What exactly is the 333, you must be wondering. The 333 is a way of building your capsule wardrobe so that you have 3 of everything—a formal version, a casual version, and an in between wardrobe. So you would have 1 pair of formal jeans, 1 pair of casual jeans, and 1 pair of semi-casual jeans. Same goes for shirts, shoes, dresses, anything you can think of. You get 11 of these for a grand total of 33 items of clothing and accessories. Not bad, right? If you want a bit more help in taking away clothes, separate your clothes into four piles: 1) LOVE 2) meh 3) hate 4) seasonal. Donate or sell your hate clothes! If you categorised it as meh, figure out why it was meh. Is it the band shirt of your favourite high school band? Is there an emotional attachment? Does it still fit? If you can see yourself wearing it in the future, keep it for now. If you don’t wear it by the end of the season, donate it! All the clothes you have left now constitute your capsule wardrobe! Congratulations! It may need some refinement, and you may find that you are lacking in some clothes. This is ok! Don’t feel bad about buying a basic tank top—your wardrobe depends on staples! Using your wardrobe, you can mix and match and layer your way into dozens of outfits.
This is a great way to minimalise how many clothes you have whilst following a set plan. If you’d like something more flexible to your own style, feel free to check out how I found myself with a capsule wardrobe!
